Dr. Sonia Shiri is Associate Professor, Middle East Language Programs Coordinator and Director of the Arabic Flagship Program at the University of ArizonaA
At the University of Arizona, CASA will be housed at the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies (MENAS) within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). MENAS and SBS have experience with successfully hosting and supporting federally-funded, complex, and multi-stakeholder Arabic programs such as the Arabic Flagship Program and Project Global Officer in addition to the Arabic Jumpstart high school program.
Professor Shiri brings extensive experience in program building and administration at UA, UC Berkeley, and in various high-profile study abroad programs. In her current position at UA, she serves as director/PI of the rigorous Arabic Flagship Program and director/PI of Project GO, as well as coordinator of the Middle East Language Programs (Arabic, Persian and Turkish). In these roles, she has engaged with successful large grant writing and management, institution building and extensive teacher training in the US and abroad. Her research interests and publications include study abroad, innovative teaching and languages in contact.
